The effects are top-notch, Nolan's direction is crisp and precise, and there's absolutely no fat left to trim away. The Dark Knight is just about as good as movies get.

2. 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button'

Oh man, I love this fantasy tale. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button may run 2 hours and 45 minutes but it's 2 hours and 45 minutes I'll never regret spending in a theater. Gorgeous to look at, every detail is perfect in this fairy tale pic from David Fincher (Fight Club, Zodiac). Watching Brad Pitt age backwards and seeing Cate Blanchett evolve from a gangly young woman into a mature, dignified senior citizen could have felt contrived, could have looked hokey even with all the progress that's been made in make-up effects. But the fact is within minutes of sitting down to watch Benjamin Button you are so lost in this beautiful story, you don't think twice about it being Pitt and Blanchett under all that make-up.

3. 'Slumdog Millionaire'

The popularity of Who Wants to be a Millionaire has waned, but you don't need to be a fan of the series to understand and enjoy Slumdog Millionaire. One of those films that's hard to resist as tagging 'a little gem', Slumdog Millionaire shows how one young man was able to emerge from horrible poverty to become a millionaire on India's version of the once-popular game show. Although some of the scenes are horrific and incredibly sad, there's a sense of hope that permeates Slumdog Millionaire. Director Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, 28 Days Later) shot the film on location in Mumbai, employing mostly unknown young actors to fill out his lead roles. 4. 'Wall-E'

Wall-E snuck up on me. It's not that I didn't want to like it - in my book Pixar hasn't made many missteps in the past. But come on...a movie about a robot that compacts trash for hundreds of years and looks a little like the character in Short Circuit? That doesn't sound all that appealing. And not only that, Pixar didn't hide the fact there wasn't much dialogue in the movie. I wasn't immediately sold on the idea but I'll tell you what, 10 minutes into the movie I fell in love with Wall-E - and I fell hard. Those magicians at Pixar, led by writer/director Andrew Stanton, did it once again. They created a magical world that draws in audiences of all ages and pulls on your heartstrings. 5. 'The Reader'

Kate Winslet is phenomenal in the lead role in The Reader, a difficult film to sit through because of its subject matter but one that doesn't attempt to apologize or make excuses for the unbelievably evil acts committed by its lead character. The Reader is one of those movies that's going to split the audience reaction into two camps - you'll love it or loathe it. There's no middle of the road with this dramatic film which focuses on the aftermath of the Holocaust and its affect on survivors.

6. 'Frost/Nixon'

Now I feel better versed about the disgraced ex-President as a fallen world leader and as a man who had to deal with being run out of office (something he brought on himself) and forced to live out his life away from the world of politics. Directed by Ron Howard and adapted for the screen by Peter Morgan (who wrote the stage play the feature film's based on), Frost/Nixon isn't just about politics and that's what makes it so fascinating. 7. 'In Bruges'

cus FeaturesDid you see In Bruges in theaters? You didn't? You are not alone. But it's out on DVD now so put it in your Netflix queue or run to the store and find out what you've been missing. Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson play hitmen sent to cool off on vacation in Bruges after a job goes horribly wrong. While the film's a little violent, it's also absolutely hilarious and features the best performance of Farrell's career. It's a shame it was released early on in 2008. Had it hit theaters in the fall, In Bruges might have stood a chance at earning a spot on more Top 10 lists and maybe even an award or two.More on 'In Bruges'

8. 'Milk'

Another bit of American history I wasn't familiar with prior to seeing a feature film on the subject, Milk chronicles Harvey Milk's rise from a small business owner to being the first openly gay man elected to office in California. Milk marks the feature film writing debut of Dustin Lance Blank who, with this film, announces himself as a screenwriter to watch. Blank condenses Milk's life without marginalizing the man and director Gus Van Sant shows considerable restraint in handling the subject matter. Loaded with terrific performances (Sean Penn, James Franco, Josh Brolin and Emile Hirsch are real standouts), Milk is a thoroughly engaging, thought-provoking story that hopefully will be the fodder of conversations for days after viewing.More on 'Milk'

9. 'The Visitor'

10. 'Defiance'

Daniel Craig scored yet another hit with his second movie as Bond, James Bond. Quantum of Solace, released on November 14, 2008, will likely finish its theatrical run with bigger numbers than Casino Royale and that's great news for Craig because it means more potential ticket buyers for his other projects - including Defiance. What might be a hard sell to audiences is made easier with the current Bond in the lead role of the oldest of three brothers who flee from the Nazis into the forest surrounding their town. Just when you think it was over, they draw you in for more. Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer are looking at a 2012 release for the fourth installment of the famous pirate franchise.

Johnny Depp is returning as Captain Jack Sparrow, but director Gore Verbinski has reportedly told Disney and Bruckheimer that he won't be behind the camera.

"I think they're (Disney) pushing towards 2012," Bruckheimer told ComingSoon.net about the possible release date for the fourth "Pirates" movie. "Hopefully we can make it; we'll see."

What was thought to be the final movie in the pirate trilogy, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End teased audiences with Sparrow and Barbossa in hot pursuit of the Fountain of Youth. Time will tell if this is the route they decide to take.

But before Edward left, he made Bella promise she wouldn't do anything reckless or stupid but, as he'd already broken his promise to 'be there for as long as she wanted him', she decides to break her promise. She goes cliff-diving, which makes Edward think she has killed herself, although it was purely for recreational purposes. So Edward travels to Italy, to provoke the Volturi so they will kill him. Alice finds Bella, and they begin a race to the Italian city of Volterra to stop him.

'XXX' Sequel

Vin Diesel 's return as thrill seeker Xander Cage has been left hanging in the balance after director Rob Cohen pulled out of the third XXX movie.

Cohen, who took charge of 2002's XXX, was due to begin work on XXX 3: The Return of Xander Cage later this year after securing original star Diesel to come back to the franchise.

But history buff Cohen has quit the project to make another action film — going back in time to shoot Medieval, reports Variety.

He says, "It was a tough decision about XXX. I talked to Vin over the weekend and said I hoped they would wait, but that if they find another director who's right for the sequel, I certainly wouldn't be angry. But I could not let something like this go."

A replacement for Cohen has yet to be announced. XXX 3 was due for release in 2010.

Angelina Jolie has been injured on the set of her new action film SALT, according to sources online. The star, who has just jetted back to the US after appearing with other half Brad Pitt on the red carpet in Cannes, sustained a minor bump to the head whilst filming. The BBC reports:

thriller Salt in New York when she suffered "a minor bump to the head".

Review: Moon

Adam Mast on Duncan Jones' MOON...

This effectively shot sci fi piece features an outstanding
performance by Sam Rockwell as Sam Bell, a miner whose been stationed
on the moon for three long years. He is completely isolated and only
has the lunar base computer (voiced by Kevin Spacey) to keep him
company. With only a few weeks left on his long and lonely shift, a
strange encounter has Bell questioning his own sanity.

Rockwell
gives a wonderfully textured, multi-layered performance, and it
reminded me a bit of Tom Hanks in Cast Away in that he doesn't really
have anyone to bounce off of here. This is essentially a one man show.
Rockwell perfectly conveys a loneliness and vulnerability that, at
times, is quite heartbreaking. Through the ingenuity of creative
direction and writing from Duncan Jones (son of David Bowie), Rockwell
is also able to showcase many different facets of his personality.
There's a stoic side, an eccentric side, and, of course, a manic side.
They're all on full display and in top form.

The plot of Moon
really takes shape in the second half of the film when a most
interesting element is introduced to this tale of a lonely man looking
forward to returning home to his family. Again, I'm not going to reveal
this particular plot point. It isn't so much a twist as it is an
intriguing hook that drives this character driven piece in a compelling
direction. Its also a plot point that will explain many of the strange
goings-on that may have puzzled some before the midway mark.

Moon
is both haunting and poetic and while the speed at which the story
unfolds may be maddening for some, there's so much here worth
recommending, including stunning art direction and an amazing score by
Clint Mansell. While Moon does touch on themes explored in 2001,
Solaris, and Silent Running, it doesn't really feel like those movies.
It exists in a world all its own. This isn't exactly a film for the
masses, but it does raise some interesting questions about humanity,
and it presents these questions in a unique, engaging way. If you have
the patience to stick with Moon, it's quite a rewarding experience.

Kirsten Dunst Returning For 'Spider-Man 4,' Villain To Be Chosen Soon

NEW YORK, New York -- Kirsten Dunst will return as Mary Jane Watson, "Spider-Man 4" producer Todd Black told the New York Post.

The star will rejoin director Sam Raimi and star Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker's love interest in the latest installment in the popular superhero franchise, which is slated for May 6, 2011.

However, don't expect wedding bells for Mary Jane and Peter - Black told the newspaper that he was unaware of such a subplot. At the close of "Spider-Man 3," the two had an emotional - but ambiguous - reunion after the film's events drove the lovers apart.

Additionally, Black hinted at the film's villain, shooting down online rumors that pegged comic book character Morbius the Living Vampire as the latest member of Spidey's rogue gallery.

Instead, the producer told the Post that the villain had a significant connection to the Big Apple.

"We're just coming up with who the villain is now," he said. "We'll be shooting in New York again. Trust me, people will appreciate who we pick, because it'll be a big part of New York."

In past films, Spider-Man has faced off with the Green Goblin, Dr. Octopus, Venom and Sandman, leaving a number of famous villains who could make their silver screen debut in "Spider-Man 4."

Among the popular options are Kraven the Hunter, Chameleon, the Hobgoblin, Mysterio, Venom offspring Carnage and the Lizard, whose human alter-ego, Dr. Curt Connors, had a role in the previous two movies.

Another potential foe could be New York crime boss the Kingpin - however, the character appeared in 20th Century Fox's "Daredevil" and would likely require a rights acquisition by Sony Pictures.

But the crime lord would give the film a New York connection - and would also be Access Hollywood film critic Scott Mantz's top choice.

"The Kingpin is grounded in reality, and that's the appeal of Spider-Man," Mantz said, adding another suggestion to the mix - femme fatale the Black Cat. "I'd like to see the Kingpin and the Black Cat, to stir the pot with Peter's relationship with Mary Jane."

I don't think it should be a surprise for anyone to hear that I'm gay.

And, with those words, Adam Lambert officially comes out of the closet in the latest issue of Rolling Stone.

While the issue of his sexual orientation was obvious - and, for the most part, irrelevant - to any American Idol fan, Lambert has been bugged about his perceived homosexuality ever since he made a major impression on season eight of the Fox competition.

Last week, he held the hand of Drake LaBry outside a Hollywood nightclub, seemingly putting an end to the speculation. But now it's on the record, official, in print. Why did he wait so long to utter the words above?

"I'm trying to be a singer, not a civil rights leader," he told the magazine.

Yes, Adam Lambert is gay. The country can move on now.

While the singer's maiden fashion venture was in collaboration with Swedish high street chain H&M, her second attempt is in association with designer Christian Audigier, reports contactmusic.com.

New Delhi, May 3 (IANS) Hollywood star Tom Hanks has promised his fans in India that his controversial "Angels & Demons" will live up to their expectations as they have a "soulful liking for thrillers". He also says he would love to come to India to "be among the most lovable human fraternity".

Hanks is glad that "Angels & Demons", a sequel to worldwide hit "The Da Vinci Code", is releasing the same day in India as in the US.

"I am happy that it is not being released in phases ... We would like to give our (Indian) audiences the thrill of seeing an exceptionally adventurous thriller along with the US on May 15," Hanks told IANS in an e-mail interview.

"They have a soulful liking especially for thrillers...I hereby promise my fans in India that they would surely enjoy this movie and it would definitely live up to their expectations," he added.

Asked if he had visited India, the 52-year-old actor said: "Honestly, I did not get an opportunity to be there. But I wish some day I will be among the most lovable human fraternity. Indians are considered very warm- hearted and humble people so I also want to have a share of that warmth."

The Oscar-winning actor, best known for his performances in "Philadelphia", "Forrest Gump" and "The Terminal", has heard a lot about the Indian film industry and is game for working here though he has not been "approached yet" for any project.

"Who doesn't know about the Indian film industry nowadays...but I never have been part of it. I know many actors but can't really pronounce their names well. Sorry for that though.

"If I get an opportunity to venture into such a project, I will seriously think about it. I want to experience the uniqueness of foreign movies and their calibre," he added.

Directed by Ron Howard, "Angels & Demons" is based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Dan Brown. While the book is a prequel to "The Da Vinci Code", Howard chose to treat "Angels & Demons" as a sequel since many had read the novel after "The Da Vinci Code".

Distributed worldwide by Columbia Pictures, it also stars Ayelet Zurer and Ewan McGregor apart from Hanks, who reprises his role as Harvard professor and religious expert Robert Langdon.

In the film, Langdon attempts to thwart the Illuminati, a 400-year-old underground organisation and their plans to wreak havoc on the Vatican.

The movie, like "The Da Vinci Code", is facing the ire of church officials for its alleged 'religious overtones' and 'anti-Catholic sentiments'. But Hanks stressed that the film does not intend to offend any religious community.

"The film is not made to raise debates or ensue into offensive gestures over any community. Neither have we come up with any stringent solution. At the core of it all is the age-old contrast between science and religion.

"'Angels & Demons' is an exemplary attempt by Ron to showcase the impact of technology to keep the faith alive among humans. I don't see it as an offence made on the Catholic community over the globe," the actor said.

Hanks is also "excited" and "overwhelmed" that the 138-minute thriller "has captured mass-fan following" despite the controversies. The trailer for the movie has already crossed a hit of over 1.2 million views on YouTube.

The actor said he had to read "a lot of stuff on Illuminati era and ancient symbols" and William Manchester's book "A World Lit only By Fire" for his role. He added that the film "has the same dose of high-end thrill and is equally fast-paced as the novel".

Apart from "Angels & Demons", his upcoming movies include "Major Matt Mason", "Toy Story 3" and "Boone's Lick".

London, May 7 (IANS) Hollywood actor Will Smith, who is the latest to add his name to the list of stars who want to be the first black James Bond, said he will be the best choice for producers.

Rapper Diddy and actor Jamie Foxx have both put their names forward as a possible replacement for current Bond, Daniel Craig, reported contactmusic.com.

Diddy went so far as to shoot a 007-themed TV ad for his fragrance line in an effort to show producers what he would look like as a black Bond.

But Smith insists he's the best choice: "Diddy probably lives the most like James Bond and Jamie Foxx got the swagger for James Bond. He can sing too, so he can add a new element to Bond, wooing the ladies. But I think I can guarantee the box office!"

Harry Potter fans not happy with new film

London, March 12 (IANS) The latest Harry Potter film "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince" is yet to be released but a few fans who saw a preview said they were not very happy.

The fans were particularly upset that main characters and key plot lines were erased. They also labelled some scenes as "pointless", reports thesun.co.uk.

There also doesn't seem to be much about the Half-Blood Prince himself and the film was dismissed as "soppy".

"The film is dominated by romance - Ron with Lavender Brown, Ginny with Dean Thomas, Hermione's growing love for Ron, Ron's potion-affected desire for Romilda Vane, and ultimately Harry and Ginny," said one fan.

"Anyone who has read the book will be severely disappointed," another lamented.

In this latest instalment, Harry is taught by Dumbledore to fight his arch nemesis Voldemort. The book features some important memories but the film features just two of these.

London, May 7 (IANS) Four James Bond classics are to be digitally restored to mark the centenary of producer Albert R. 'Cubby' Broccoli, who financed the movies.

Distributed by classic film specialists, Park Circus, the films -- "Dr. No", "From Russia With Love", "Goldfinger" and "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" -- will be digitally restored frame by frame by Lowry Digital Images, the world's leader in digital restoration and image enhancement, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

The process involves taking moving pictures that show signs of age and wear, removing the fading, dirt, scratches and other defects that occur over time, and returning them to their original condition.

The restored classics will also be re-released on consecutive Sundays in over 60 cinema halls across London in June.

The films will be screened via the UK Film Council's Digital Screen Network, lottery funded through the UK Film Council's Prints and Advertising Fund.

Jay Leno bids emotional farewell to 'The Tonight Show'

London, May 31 (IANS) American television personality Jay Leno has ended his 17-year stint as the host of "The Tonight Show".

The talk-show host bowed out of his final appearance Friday by welcoming the 68 kids born to his staff during his run on the show, reports contactmusic.com.

Leno first saluted trombone player Matt Fenders' teenage daughter Hannah, who was born just weeks after he started as show's frontman, and then he held back tears as he introduced the other 67 children.

He ended the show by boasting the kids were his legacy and that when they asked their parents where they met, they'd say, "They met on the stage of 'The Tonight Show'."

Leno's last show began with a studio audience standing ovation that lasted almost two minutes and then the white-haired host joked, "When I started this show, my hair was black and the President was white."

The comedian's replacement, Conan O'Brien, was Leno's last guest.

Jackie Chan reaches 100 film milestone!

New York, April 25 (IANS) Action hero Jackie Chan will start work on "Chinese Zodiac", which will be his 100th project. He is also co-directing the action caper after a 11-year-gap.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, "Chinese Zodiac" is produced by Emperor Motion Pictures and will see Chan on a treasure hunt across the globe.

"The theme of the film revolves around a subject close to the hearts of Chinese people around the world," said Chan.

Chan will co-direct the film with Stanley Tong, who directed Chan-starrers like "Rumble in the Bronx", "The Myth" and the third and fourth entries in the "Police Story" series.

Chan last took on the director's baton for "Who Am I?" in 1998.
